Public Health Guidance for Residents

When to Seek Medical Care

If you may have been exposed and are experiencing shortness of breath or difficulty breathing, seek immediate medical attention. Contact your healthcare provider or visit an emergency department.

There is generally no point-of-care test available through the Health Department to determine whether an individual has been exposed to a chemical. Evaluation is based on factors such as the nature and duration of the exposure, symptoms, and, when appropriate, clinical testing directed by a healthcare professional.

If You Develop Symptoms

Individuals who were exposed to the initial smoke plume and develop any of the following symptoms should contact the Poison Help Line at 1-800-222-1222:

  • Persistent coughing or wheezing
  • Significant shortness of breath
  • Severe headache or dizziness
  • Other concerning symptoms following exposure

Who May Be More Sensitive to Smoke Exposure?

Some individuals may be more sensitive to the effects of smoke exposure, including:

  • Children
  • Older adults
  • People with asthma
  • People with other heart or lung conditions

If you or a member of your household falls into one of these groups and you have concerns or develop symptoms, contact your healthcare provider.

Continued Coordination and Updates

If the environmental assessment identifies findings that require additional public-health guidance, the Toledo-Lucas County Health Department will work with the appropriate agencies to communicate that information promptly.

Residents should continue to follow guidance issued by responding agencies as additional information becomes available.
