Public Availability of Naloxone

Naloxone is a medication that can reverse an overdose that is caused by an opioid drug (prescription pain medication or heroin). When administered, the naloxone blocks the effects of opioids on the brain and restores breathing within two to eight minutes. It is not a narcotic and is not addictive.

The Health Department will dispense the kits and provide mandatory training on how to use them.

Naloxone is available to those in need, regardless of their ability to pay. All health insurances can be billed, but we will not turn away those without coverage. For additional information, please call our Opioid Coordinator at 419-213-4160.

Monday – Friday: 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM

Naloxone Training is available for all agencies, but the distribution of Project DAWN-provided kits will be prioritized, and “at-risk” parties will always be given priority access based on availability.

Request a Naloxone (Narcan) Kit To Be Mailed To You

Naloxone (Narcan) is available to Lucas County residents by mail from the Toledo-Lucas County Health Department through Project DAWN, a community-wide naloxone distribution program.

In order to be eligible for a naloxone kit to be mailed to you, you must be a resident of Lucas County. Mail-order naloxone kits will include two 4 mg doses of nasal spray naloxone, a face shield, gloves, and educational materials. You can request a kit by completing our mail order request form and watching the instructional video on how to administer naloxone.

This program educates opioid users, their family members, and/or their friends on how to recognize the signs and symptoms of a drug overdose, when to call emergency medical services, when to perform CPR, and how to administer naloxone/Narcan nasally.

REQUESTING NARCAN (NALOXONE) TRAINING FOR AN AGENCY/GROUP

Please note that this will take place on a first-come, first-served basis, with priority distribution to the agency’s/individual participants with stated risk factors.

Please be advised that the Toledo-Lucas County Health Department does not have an unlimited supply of Naloxone Kits and reserves the right to provide them on a first-come, first-served basis to agencies serving “at-risk” clients and individuals. Most insurance providers will pay for Naloxone. Any individual seeking Naloxone that does not meet the “at-risk” criteria will be provided with a Certificate of Training that they may present to a local pharmacy with their insurance information.

All participants receiving a Naloxone Kit at the event will be required to complete a Project DAWN form and a Request to Bill Insurance form at the time of the distribution.
